We will find a way

Posted on Mon Nov 2nd, 2026 @ 9:31am by Commodore Xavier Carey & Lieutenant Talsi Carey & Lieutenant Commander Sky Carey

Mission: The Next Watch
Location: Quarters
Timeline: before promotion

After hearing the news, Xavier brought Tal with him to their quarters. It wasn't good news, and he figured both of them should be there, when the news broke. "Sky are you home?"

Sky heard Xavier’s voice, walking out of the nursery where she’d just put their twins to sleep she smiled. “I’m here…” she paused as she sensed Xavier’s emotions. “What’s wrong?”

He didn't know how to break it easy so he just said it. "Betazed has been captured by the Dominion."

“What!!?” Sky gave her husband a horrified look. Fortunately her mother was off world most of the time aboard the starship she served on, but she had extended family there. “When? How??”

"The details are still coming in. But six hours ago, they capitulated. Or they would have had catastrophic casualties."

Sky took a seat, this was horrific news for every Betazoid that was away from home. “I… guess they did what they had to do, so what happens now?”

"Now we fight. We do what we need to." Tal replied, "With his new rank and task force, we should be able to a lot more."

“Wait… what? New rank? Task force?” Sky gave Xavier a look that asked him to fill the blanks.

"Ive been promoted to Commodore, and I’ve decided this ship is going to be the task force flag ship."

“Commodore! Wow, Congratulations Imzadi!” Sky offered a warm smile. “So you’ll be commanding the task force while commanding the ship?”

"Toni is still the Captain, I’ve got eight ships to be in charge of right now."

“So you’re still going to be able to remain onboard? No shifting you off anywhere else?” Sky asked wanting to be sure.

"I got to choose where I station, and what ship i stay on." He looked around, the entire quarters, the plants required for Tal, "Plus this already is accommadating for the family so."

Sky smiled relieved at that. “That sounds wonderful to me. Now all I have to worry about is Betazed.”

"I know starfleet will do all they can to get it back."

Sky nodded. “In the meantime Starfleet is going to have a lot of angry and upset Betazoids on their hands, and that’s not necessarily a good thing. We aren’t a war-like people, but desperate people do desperate things.”

"Starfleet has advised them to remain peaceful. If they do, the likelihood of them surviving it is high. The Bajorans, hasn't retaliated and they are fine. I know different scenario, but resistance is what gets people killed."

Sky nodded. “I know, but we don’t know what’s truly going on it’ll only be what the Dominion tells us is going on.”

Tal smiled. "The dominion won't, but just because the dominion won't tell us, we still have people on the ground relaying it to command. Im sure starfleet has men in the cardassian military that have an ear out."

Sky nodded. “Let’s hope so, the longer this goes on had Betazed is held the more explosive it’s going to get with those who are away from homeworld. As I said we’re not a violent people, but you know what happens.”

"I know what happens." Xavier stated. "I know betazed is different than Bajor, but as of right now reports aren't really showing any mass killing of civilians, the ones that have arrose have been quelled swiftly, so they have ceased. We are going to maintain contact with our contacts on the ground, try and keep things calm before they start eliminating civilians. Its the safest thing they can do right now."

“Understood” Sky nodded. “I’ll do my best to reassure those here on ship as much as I can.”

Xavier smiled. "I am sure you will do good at doing just that. But you have also got to take care of the primary one you are responsible for."

“That would be me, correct?” Sky nodded. “I have the two of you, and our children to keep my mind occupied. When I need comfort I’ll know where to find it.”

"If you don't look after yourself you cannot look after anyone else after all." Tal replied

“That’s very true Tal” Sky nodded and smiled.

Xavier looked at her. "So what exactly do you want. I know this whole situation... is a lot to bear. Without being on the ship command team. It frees me up a bit."

“What do I want?” Sky gave Xavier a thoughtful look. “Any news you can get on my parents for starters. Plus anything I can give to those we have here to help put minds temporarily at rest.”

"I have already been put in the loop. regarding anything to come of it." Xavier replied.

Sky nodded. “I know you’ll do everything you can. I can’t ask for more than that.”

"In the mean time, why don't the three of us, head down to deck five. The cafe is still open. We can get a bite to eat... there are some meditation classes going on afterwards."

Sky nodded. “I’ll need to get the twins ready to go with us, unless you have a babysitter in mind?”

"Who can we call, on such short notice."

“Let’s take them with, make it a full family outing.” Sky smiled warmly. “It might help take my mind off things for a little while, hopefully.”

"Well getting your mind off of it, is not something that would be easy." Xavier replied as he walked over, handing Connor over to Tal for a changing.

Sky nodded. “I’m hoping my parents got off world before this happened, they were only supposed to be there while their ship was on layover. I’m guessing no news right now is a bad thing rather than a good thing.”

"I am going to find out." Xavier promised, as Tal came out. "Ready?" He asked as he headed to the door.

Sky nodded as she picked up Chloe, having changed their daughter on the sofa while they talked. “We’re ready.”

"Very well lets go." Xavier replied as the trio walked out. "So i hear there is something the Captain wants to talk to you about."

“There is?” Sky gave her husband a curious look. “No doubt I’ll find out what that is soon enough.”

"Why don't you pay her a visit, after our walk, and see what she has to say."

Sky nodded. “I’ll do that, have to say I’m curious now!”

"Thats good. I am still unsure if its bad or good."

“Don’t say that!” Sky gave Xavier a shake of her head. “As far as I know I’ve done nothing bad, so it can only be good.”

"Oh I don't know, she didn't seem too happy about it."

“Are you forgetting I can sense your emotions?” Sky asked giving her husband a smile.

"Here I thought I was getting better at hiding them. Guess I need to work harder on that I guess."

Sky grinned. “You can’t hide your emotions from me, we’re bonded. I feel you all the time even if we’re not in the same room.”

"Humans thought they had it bad 300 years ago, when women only thought they could read our minds."

“Cheeky!” Sky gave him a playful swat. “You know I don’t pry, your thoughts are private unless you want me to read them.”

"I never have anything to hide you know that."

Sky nodded giving Xavier a more sincere look. “I know that Imzadi.”

"Anyway lets get to it."

Sky nodded. “Let’s indeed.”
